Paediatric Asthma Digital Support Study – Information for Parents and Carers
We are inviting parents and carers to take part in a short engagement activity to support the development of a new digital asthma management system for children and young people. This work is being delivered by QIoT, in collaboration with NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (NHS GGC) and clinical teams at the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.
This webpage provides an overview of the project, the purpose of the workshops, and how you can register your interest.
About the Project
Children with asthma often experience fluctuations in symptoms that can be difficult to monitor consistently. Early warning signs may be subtle, and families frequently manage asthma day-to-day with limited digital support.
To address this, QIoT and NHS GGC are developing a digital asthma support system designed to help:
- Track symptoms and medication use more easily
- Identify patterns or early signs of deterioration
- Share clearer, more structured information with clinicians
- Reduce unplanned GP visits and hospital admissions
- Support young people to understand and manage their condition
The system consists of:
- A Child App featuring simple, child-friendly daily check-ins
- A Parent App for monitoring, reminders, and shared insights
- A secure Clinician Portal used only by NHS respiratory teams
Before finalising the system for a small pilot, we are gathering feedback from families to ensure it is usable, clear, and clinically meaningful.
Purpose of the Engagement Workshops
The workshops aim to capture early feedback from families to ensure the system reflects real-world needs. Specifically, we hope to understand:
- How families currently manage asthma at home
- What features would be most beneficial
- Any practical challenges or concerns
- Whether the app feels intuitive, accessible, and age-appropriate
- Suggestions for improvements before the pilot stage
Insight from parents, carers, and young people will directly shape the next phase of development and help ensure the tool is suitable for wider clinical use.
What Participation Involves
Participation is voluntary and involves three simple steps:
1. Registering Interest (1 minute)
Please complete a short online form using the link below.
We will collect basic contact information and a small number of optional background questions.
2. A 20-Minute Online Discussion (Microsoft Teams)
Once you register, a member of the QIoT team will contact you to schedule a short online discussion.
During this call we will:
- Outline the aims of the project
- Provide a brief demonstration of the application
- Ask for your initial impressions and feedback
- Answer any questions you may have
3. A Short Follow-Up Questionnaire
Immediately after the call, we will send a short questionnaire to capture your views in a structured format.
There is no obligation to join the later pilot, and participation at this stage does not commit you to future involvement.
Who Can Take Part
We welcome participation from:
- Parents and carers of children with asthma
- Children and young people aged 6–16 (attending alongside a parent/carer)
- Families who have regular experience with asthma management, clinics, or inhaler use
No technical experience is required.
